Our History
Conserving Greek-American Heritage Since 2006
Greek Cultural Resources is a cultural non-profit founded in 2006 by Meletios Pouliopoulos, a Greek-American historian, archivist, and independent scholar, to conserve Greek-American Heritage.
The Collection
The materials archive is well curated and approximately 40% described. Originally centered around Greek music and related traditions, the collection now includes all of Greek-American heritage – including the Greek American newspapers, journals, manuscripts, ephemera, books in Greek and English, and photographs, film and video.
Physical artifacts have been taken in as well, as part of larger collections, and material from Greek American organizations. Greek Cultural Resources in many ways has become a collection of collections.
The Music Archive
The music archive is perhaps the largest collection of Greek-American music in the United States, featuring thousands of commercial and independent recordings. Included are hundreds of field recordings on reel-to-reel tapes, the collections of four Greek-American radio stations, and hundreds of hours of Greek-American radio programs.
Also, the Greek Cultural Resources archive includes a large collection of Greek American sheet music, and original music manuscripts going back to the 1930s. The archive includes secular and non-secular music, and music from shared traditions with Albanian, Armenian, Balkan, Jewish, Spanish, Turkish and Middle Eastern cultures.
🎼 The Dino Pappas Collection
Highlighting the music collection are the discographic notes of Gust J. (Dino) Pappas (1931–1999), widely regarded as the father of Greek discography. His profile, written by Stavros K Frangos, was published in the 2019 book on Greek Music in America (2019, University of Illinois Press). The Dino Pappas collection at Greek Cultural Resources contains hundreds of Dino's handwritten catalog pages with notes and accompanying cassettes.
